14’ Whitehall Skiff, Row Boat   “The Glass Slipper”      The Glass Slipper is a beautiful replica of an American Yankee designed 14’ Whitehall Skiff. It’s a fast pulling boat for low impact exercise. It is a stable platform for photography and fishing. It has a shallow draft about four to six inches, perfect exploring back waters or open lakes.      The Whitehalls were used as early as 1820. It was a fast shore to open water anchored ships for off loading freight. It needed tone fast, seaworthy, and low waterline for off loading and stable enough for a man to stand loading crate and barrels in open water. The fastest boats made the most turn arounds and the rower rich.      The “Glass Slipper” was named and built by Salt Marine of Florida in the spring of 1978. The hull is fiberglass weighing in at a mere 120 pounds. This skiff has positive floatation under all three seats. The bow is proud and raises up to break any chop. The formed fiberglass hull shows off its beautiful lap-stuck lines as it raises up to a graceful wine glass transom. Because of shape, this skiff leaves no wake. In the midship the gunnels are low for easy entry, stability, and efficient rowing height. The Beam is 3’6”. The gunnels finished and reinforced with solid teak. The seats, bow, and transom are appointed also in teak. The hardware is bronze . Midship are a pair of bronze retractable oar lock riser. They are mounted on the gunnels in white oak for strength.  The oars are 8’ spruce with teak inlays. The oar lock rides on leather with a leather button stop.      The skiff was built for me and I have enjoyed rowing with my dog for over 46 seasons. Always garage kept, it has been meticously maintained and the teak well oiled. The only additions, I added a deck plate with sock for waterproof storage of keys and phone. I made a removable platform in the bow for my dog to navigate and bark if I am going to hit anything!      A trailer is included. I repurposed a older boat trailer. I only reused the spine and torsion axel. The upgrades are: full length carpeted bunks, extra rollers, taller wheels and tires with mounted spare, fenders, lighting and stainless hardware. The white PCV pipe was used to create a wishbone frame for strength and allow the bunks to be adjustable. The trailer was to be multipurpose because my other boat in the fleet was a 12’ Butterfly Sailboat. The PCV pipe provided secure storage inside for the sailboat mast and boom. The trailer can easily be pulled as I did with a four cylinder car. As I got older the cars got bigger and I found I could not see the empty trailer in my rear view mirror! I added two snow plow blade markers for that purpose.      Both the skiff and trailer have Illinois titles.      Time has told me and my dog we are getting old. Its a skiff with classic lines and fast (you can maintain 4 to 5 knots at a comfortable cadence). Shorter oars can be used for fishing or by younger person. It’s a great way to stay in shape. As I pass it on, I hope someone else can enjoy their own adventures on the water and the love of rowing.
